A Cure for Holiday Overeating

The Problem
What’s the best way to enjoy holiday parties and meals without jeopardizing your fitness goals?

The Solutions:

Get back on track the next day
The day after the holiday, get back to your regular diet. Drink more water than usual. Go a bit lighter on carbs, especially if you indulged in appetizers. –iVillager

Get right back to your regular program of a healthy diet and regular exercise. You should have cheat days built into your schedule anyway. –iVillager

I would drink plenty of water and eat very lightly for the next two to three days, basically fruits and vegetables. Definitely get out and do some aerobic exercise. –iVillager

Thanksgiving 1999 is in the past. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get going. Feeling sorry for myself never got me anywhere. And I’m gettin’ somewhere! Lots of people were in the gym today working off that dinner, drinking their water and smiling. –Marlys

Indulge and enjoy
Splurge, splurge, splurge. If you are like me, you work hard 95 percent of the time — exercising, eating in moderation, etc. Enjoy this day for what it really means (giving thanks and being with family) and eat without worrying. –iVillager

I feel that going off of your diet for one day is a good thing. Go back to your regular plan the next day. Everyone deserves one day of guilt-free eating. –Deb

One day is not going to ruin your figure. –iVillager

Enjoy yourself for one day. You could be gone the next day. We all deserve it. –Wendy in MN

I look forward to sharing the holidays with my family. I don’t worry about overeating. The holidays are a time to enjoy and relax. I take a long walk after the holiday feast and get back to my normal eating and exercising habits AFTER THE HOLIDAY. –iVillager

Everyone needs to lighten up. Eat, drink and be merry. If you start to feel uncomfortable, stop. It is not healthy to stress so much about whether or not to enjoy a holiday with a little extra. –iVillager

I enjoy eating my Thanksgiving dinner; it is only once a year, so I say enjoy. –an avid dieter

Don’t feel guilty
I try to get back to my regular program ASAP and I tell the ‘little voice’ that berates me for overeating to shut up. –iVillager

Skip the appetizers
I try not to eat the appetizers. Eat a light breakfast so you’re not starved by turkey time. –Steph

Listen to your body
When I spend a few minutes deep breathing and stretching (at least 30 seconds per position, 5 or 6 different stretches), I am less likely to overeat because I am more mindful of what my body feels like and needs and I know it doesn’t need to overload. –Sue

It was a long road to realize that a long-term, sensible eating plan with a little exercise thrown in means that your body will tell you what it wants and when it wants it. Why should Thanksgiving be any different? I will eat until I’m satisfied and then stop. Who wants to be either starving or suffering from an overfull tummy anyway? –Anna

I read that the average Thanksgiving dinner has over 3,000 calories. Our bodies don’t need that many calories all at once. There’s nothing wrong with having a little extra turkey or pie, but don’t go crazy and make yourself sick. –iVillager

Control your portions
Be reasonable with your portion sizes. The smaller your portions are, the more variety of food you get to choose from the table — it’s all a game during the holiday season, and I plan to beat it. Exercise, definitely, but most of all enjoy the holiday season — make one of those small portions a dessert. –Pearl

I have little portions of absolutely everything I love to eat, even if it is just a bite or two. Spend a little time being grateful between bites, and you will probably leave out a few. I am usually able to get through the holidays without any weight gain that way. –Sue

It’s ‘just another meal’
To me it is just like another normal meal. If you think that you are supposed to eat more on a holiday, you will, even though your body may not need the extra calories. –iVillager

I’m not going to overeat just because it seems traditional to do so on Thanksgiving. I’ve been doing so well all year, why let one day mess up my diet? I will eat as usual and continue my regular routine of exercise. –Hazel

Avoid the leftovers
The dinner is over, but now comes the real challenge for me — all those leftovers, each one as wonderful on day two (or three) as on day one. I use moderation, brisk walks and support meetings with different groups. These meetings get me out of the house and moving with positive thoughts about myself. They help me remember that the ‘children in India’ don’t care if every bite of food isn’t scraped off my plate and into my face. –ginia2

Just try to get back to your diet plan as soon as possible. The longer you eat leftovers, the harder it will be. –Lori

Work out the morning of the feast
I’m going to allow myself a little extra, which I do on occasion anyway. I am also going to take the time to work out Thanksgiving morning and the day after. It helps me not to feel so bad if I’ve overdone it a little — or a lot. –Steph

I plan to go hiking before Thanksgiving dinner. Keeping active and enjoying the day with people I care about means more than eating lots of food. Do what makes you happy over the holidays. –destine_pe

I just put the turkey in the oven about an hour ago. I’m going to take a walk with my dog while it cooks and be grateful for a wonderful day. Food is not all there is to life. –iVillager

I plan on exercising in the morning. –Ade

Concentrate on the true meaning of the holiday
Enjoy your company and let the food enhance it, not the other way around. –Becky

If you spend the day volunteering in a homeless shelter to feed the poor, then this trivial matter of weight gain is not a problem. –Paula

People need to stop looking at holidays as food-centered occasions and start looking at them as festive times for sharing and giving with one’s friends and family. –iVillager
